Impressionist Frank Weston Benson (1862 – 1951) painted idyllic, light-filled scenes of ethereal women and children. He often depicted his wife and three daughters in his seascapes and landscapes, whose visible brushwork and delicate palette deftly captured the transient qualities of light and atmosphere. Benson founded The Ten, a group of painters who left the conservative Society of American Artists to promote their work through personal exhibitions. Benson, who also painted wildlife scenes, is credited with establishing the sporting print as a distinct art form, and is among the 20th century’s most outstanding wildlife painters.
